Handrail Requirement Clarification

August 13, 2015

In light of some recent discussion regarding handrails, we feel it is appropriate to add some clarification. The handrail requirement has long been an issue many of you have commented on. Common sense has to be the prevailing judge to prevent potential liability hazards. What is the slope of the steps? What is the width of the steps? What is the condition of the steps? Are they well maintained or do they show signs of cracks or decay?

Rockford Mutual will consider steps up to 4 without a handrail given the slope and condition are in good condition. This means beginning at ground level, an individual will take 4 separate steps up to the final landing. In addition, from time to time, it is reasonable to make an exception to this rule given the conditions warrant it. We ask you contact or Farm Underwriter, Phil Jansen, if you would like for us to consider making an exception to the 4 step guideline. Sending a photo will be required as well. Ultimately, we wish to do what is right and makes sense for all parties involved, while avoiding a liability hazard.

Should you have any questions please feel free to contact Phil Jansen at extension 3273, or myself at extension 3161. As always, thank you for your business, we appreciate it!
